An endemic ohia lehua tree (Metrosideros polymorpha) grows on the steep, eroding slopes of reddish volcanic rock below the rim of Waimea Canyon, Waimea Canyon State Park, Kauai, Hawaii. According to Nicolai Barca, Field Technician for The Nature Conservancy on Kauai, "accelerated erosion was sparked by over browsing by goats. Now sun, heat, wind, water, the lack of water, continued grazing, and smothering by soil are factors leading to desertification."
